Ego is not this bad thing we’ve been told to believe by society, but what really is ego?

Have you had moments where you feel really negatively about yourself (e.g.nobody likes you, you’re not good enough, what’s the point, etc) to feeling really good about yourself (e.g. I’m so good, I know exactly what I’m doing, everybody loves me, etc)?

But are those thoughts true or are they just based on your external stance and your ego?
